Evolutionary Ecology

Definition
Evolutionary ecology approaches ecology-the interrelationships between organisms and their relation to the environment-in a way that explicitly considers the evolutionary history of species and the interactions between the evolving species (coevolution). The distinction between ecology and evolution is largely artificial.

"When we no longer look at an organic being as a savage looks at a ship, as something wholly beyond his comprehension; when we regard every production of nature as one which has had a long history ; when we contemplate every complex structure and instinct as the summing up of many contrivances, each useful to the possessor, in the same way as any great mechanical invention is the summing up of the labour, the experience, the reason, and even the blunders of numerous workmen ; when we thus view each organic being, how far more interesting - I speak from experience - does the study of natural history become!"

My friends,
My name is Patric Roberts. I just joined Wise-Earth and my Group The Order of Earth is a Colorado Non Profit formed in May 2002 committed to Sustainability in the 21st Century by creating an innovative elder platform. Currently a By Invitation Only group. Our first project is Maka Si Tomni (Lakota translation for The Order of Earth) and we are facilitating the Little Big Horn Victory Celebration of June 25th 2008. The largest gathering of 1st nation descendants of the Greasy Grass battle in 132 years. The Maka Si Tomni group on Wise-Earth is an open group.

I am interested in exploring this discourse of Evolutionary Ecology. I am a beginner. In 1984, I discovered the seminal work of Humberto Maturana, Francisco Verela, (Philosophy of Structural Determinism - Theory of Autopoiese) and Fernando Flores (Theory of Communicative Competence) and fell in love with biology as an explanation of reality.

My basic stance is I am an "observer" living in the moment, a dynamic temporal biological structure aware of being aware, living in language. Fish live in the medium of water, birds live in the medium of air, and as a human being "I" live in the medium of language, a linguistic universe, where I create my identity and coordinate coordinations in all the domains of actions in living. So being a linguistic "observer" I make assessments concerning reality today based on the conservation of history, human desires, I am. So caring, feeding and nurturing the questions concerning evolutionary Ecology is an interesting beginning conversation, for me, in this Wise-Earth community. I am in a mood of wonder in the social learning and relationships that may arise in this exploration.

I offer to share "The Order of Earth - a Clarion Call" document posted on my group page with interested individuals. Maka Si Tomni project on Wise-Earth is The Order of Earth's first project, Bringing Forth a Thriving Lakota Language & Culture. The Lakota friends I am in relationship with have introduced me to the Lakota Paradigm, way of being and seeing that is priceless! An oral/song languaging that is based in social relations with all life, rocks, stars, plants, animals including insects. OE Wilson's notion of a "Encyclopedia of Life" points out to us that we are living in a mystery of social relations. When he speaks of the ignorance we have of all the "doing" going on within the web of life and the degradation and extinction currently taking place, it is a wake-up call. The Lakota language and culture is an example of extinction of a culture in modernity. And it is also an opportunity to shift the patriarchal standard practices of exclusion and appropriation to embrace a new viewpoint. So I am an explorer like OE Wilson looking into the notion of two-legged animals biological roots as social loving animals.

I am not a professor, savior or somebody with status, position or power, just a nobody that believes in human dignity within the web of life. The insights I offer have been disclosed by examining my own self-deceptions in the creations I have chosen to participate in. I am humbled by entering this conversation of evolutionary ecology where a reflection regarding evolution is happening, and, where we as "observers" can be aware we making assessments as observers about ourselves in the midst of all life. I feel like a child, in a mood of wonder, awe, at what may be discovered in all these tiny insects, communities in which I am a part.
Thank you
Patric
