Biodiversity
![]() photo source |
Short for biological diversity, biodiversity refers to the number and kinds of organisms on the planet. It includes genetic diversity, taxonomic (species) diversity, and ecosystem diversity. Biodiversity can be viewed within marine, terrestrial, and inland water biomes, or by genetics such as plant, animal, and fungi diversity. Biodiversity is the source of all human food, domesticated breeds of animals and plants, as well as bio-based medicines. Approximately 10 percent of all the species on earth are known. |
