The deliberate or accidental release of alien species to the ecosystem is having major impacts on native biota. Over five hundred marine species, for instance, have moved into the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. Other sources include: deliberate introduction of harvestable species, accidental escapes from aquaria and aquaculture, escape from ship ballast, and release of fouling species on the hulls of ships.

In 1990 the US Government passed the Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Prevention and Control Act, aimed primarily at keeping invasive aquatic species out of the Great Lakes. It did so by requiring that ballast water be exchanged at sea before entering the Great Lakes. In 1996 this law was reauthorized under the National Invasive Species Act (NISA,) however, NISA expired in 2002 and is currently under reconsideration by Congress. For more information see the Wiser Earth resource UCS: The National Aquatic Invasive Species Act.
