Tuberculosis
TuberculosisTuberculosis (TB) is one of the top four infectious diseases of humans. It is transmitted in airborne droplets during coughing and sneezing. In 2004, there were 14.6 million humans with active TB (with 9 million new cases) and about 1.7 million deaths. About one-third of the world population has latent TB. About 10 percent of these cases will lead to death. TB occurs mostly in developing nations but can appear anywhere with immune-compromised patients. TB is resurging, in part, from the spread of HIV/AIDS, in part from drug-resistant strands of the bacterium, and in part from deteriorating environmental conditions in various parts of the world. The existence of a public health infrastructure for early diagnosis and quarantine is essential to limiting the spread of TB. |

Nice summary page here. I'm working with a company focused on replacing the 100 year-old skin test for TB screening. A NYC group, Treatment Action Group, has laid out where current R&D investment is being made worldwide in TB basic research, drugs, vaccines and new diagnostics.
