Sustainable Building

Photos used with the permission of Steven Klocke stevenklocke.com Sustainable green building is the practice of constructing buildings using environmentally responsibly produced materials and techniques that minimize the environmental impact of the building throughout its lifetime. For example, a green building can be built using energy efficient and nontoxic materials and can use renewable power generation to provide electricity for the building.

Sustainable building design is a philosophy that integrates a vast array of design solutions to minimize waste, emphasize the primacy of the human factor in the built environment, and create a product that will stand the test of time. The concept of sustainable design is not a strict set of rules or a set of select technologies to implement. It is a paradigm shift away from the rut that current engineering and design practices are stuck in. Future impacts are considered throughout the design process, in order to produce a product that turns potential waste into future resources and uses more free natural processes, such as sunlight and airflow. Using free natural processes produces greater comfort and usability without a temporal cost, rather than using standard mechanical systems as a quick and cheap crutch procured by the ‘cookie-cutter' lowest-bid design process. When it comes to buildings, it is very important to look into the future. Buildings are some the longest lasting human creations. Not only that, but modern buildings are one of the largest energy consumers, using 2/3 of all electricity globally and producing 1/3 of all greenhouse gas emissions. With sustainable design, these statistics could be drastically reduced, but paradigm shifts don't come easily. text source

I would like to propose an amendment to the definition. 'Sustainable' is not just a synonym for 'environment', it is a concept that embraces much wider dimensions and considers conflicts,  trade offs, synergies and unifying visions.

If this section were labelled Green Building, and the word Sustainable the above opening paragraph would stand. A definition of Sustainable Building needs to be wider and include e.g. the role and purpose of buildings in developing a society with greater social capital or the scope for design to contribute to healthier population.

We have an position open at homeWORD, an affordable housing non-profit that builds all of its projects using green building principles. Chris Allen was on the board, so I am visiting his site to see if I can collect interested people in an amazing organization in Missoula Montana that connects sustainability with affordability.

My goal is to design and build homes and communities with people for the environment. I've been working for the last 15 years but I'm still just starting out.

I work in the southern California area and the Big Island of Kona.
