Since WiserEarth is a community-driven site, this page has been established to direct the democratization of decision-making on WiserEarth which includes: functions, capabilities and structure.
Goals
- Encourage a fair & equal, exchange and discussion of suggestions that could be implemented by the WiserEarth technical team.
- Reflect the fundamental Principles of WiserEarth which include: transparency, respect, community, networking, collaboration, and visibility.
1. Nominate
Duration: IndefiniteProcess: Introduce suggestion and collect four supporting votes
The first step in implementing suggestions for WiserEarth is nominating a suggestion to Suggestion Box, which maintains an account of: a short description of the suggestion, the user who submitted it, the current status and the date of submission.
After a suggestion receives four votes, a deliberation page will be created. Suggestions may be stored in the suggestion box indefinitely until a discussion is created. Create a deliberation page by adding a new wikipage. For example: Vertical Scroll Bar to Search Countries: Deliberation.
2. Deliberation
Duration: One week (7 days)Processes: feature description, majority vote, and priority
After a suggestion receives four votes, a discussion page will be created and for one week users can debate the suggestion. The page should introduce the original suggestion with a more detailed description. An outline of what should be included can be found at the New Feature Formatting page.
After a user makes a case supporting or opposing the suggestion, they should include a YES/NO vote in their comments. This is accomplished by using a sliding scale of 1-5 *'s for a positive vote or 1-5 0's for a negative. In each of these, the 1 has the weakest emphasis and the 5 is the strongest. At the end of the week, if the positive votes outnumber the negative votes, the suggestion will advance to be ticketed. If the negative votes outnumber the positive votes, the suggestion must be re-nominated in the Suggestion Box with four supporting votes. As discussion pages evolve, please abide by the Community Guidelines.

Roger,This page seems like the perfect place for the GA priority software... altho at this point seems like things are in process ... is there a flowchart in existence yet for the GA process?

If voting is implemented, I strongly advise using two scales instead of one. Interest from 1 to 5 and Approval from -3 to +3. When just one rating scale is used for voting on messages, it can happen that platitudes get elected. I realize that for the limited purpose of voting on feature changes, one scale would probably be fine, but once this voting feature exists, it is likely to be extended to other forums as well, and that is where it will really help get better results if Interest and Approval are separated. To determine the winner in such a two scale system, multiply average interest times average approval. I would not require voters to make both ratings for their vote to count, but that is really a minor detail.
