Purpose of Peace Day
In 1981, on the 20th anniversary of the United Nations General
Assembly, a UN resolution declared that the International Day of Peace "will serve as a reminder to all peoples that our Organization,
with all its limitations, is a living instrument in the service of
peace and should serve all of us here within the Organization as a
constantly pealing bell reminding us that our permanent commitment,
above all interests or differences of any kind, is to peace. May this
Peace Day indeed be a day of peace."

Peace Day 2007
Who celebrates Peace Day?
Peace Day can be observed by anybody, anywhere.
 It
is not necessary to organize events or participate in group activities.
It can be as simple as lighting a candle at home or meditate on
peace. In 2006, over 3500 events in 200 countries were organized. Some examples of how Peace Day is observed: - People throughout the world join together in one minute of silence in common commitment to Peace.
- Organizations hold conferences and workshops about Peace and conflict resolution.
 - Schools organize Peace Day events, where
students get an opportunity to express their ideas about Peace and how
to accomplish Peace.
- Places of worship organize Peace Day Prayer and/or meditation.
- Musicians and other performers dedicate their work on September 21 to Peace.
- September 21 is declared an official Day of Peace by Mayors, Governors or other decision makers.
 - Individuals write letters to local newspapers about International Day of Peace and/or other issues related to Peace.

Background
In establishing the International Day of Peace, the United Nations General Assembly decided that it would be appropriate
"to devote a specific time to concentrate the efforts of the United
Nations and its Member States, as well as of the whole of mankind, to
promoting the ideals of peace and to giving positive evidence of their commitment to peace in all viable ways...; (The International Day of Peace) should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples."

Why September 21?
The amended Resolution adopted in 2001 permanently fixed the date of
the International Day of Peace to September 21. The new Resolution
added the call for the International Day of Peace to be a Global
Ceasefire:
"Declares that the International Day of Peace shall henceforth
be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an
invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of
hostilities for the duration of the Day"

---RE: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE MESSAGE
As the world celebrates the international day of Peace on 21st September 2007 , Media for Peace and Religious Tolerance Organization {MPRTO} would like to join the government of Uganda, the United Nations, Diplomatic missions accredited to Uganda and all loving people of the world in marking this very important and vital day.
MPRTO believes that the international day of Peace should not be dedicated to making speeches only, but should be dedicated to action that brings peace in the whole world.
We should dedicate this year’s international peace day to the Juba peace talks between the government of Uganda and the Lords Resistance Army rebels. There is need for parties at the talks to put peace above their selfish interests.
We at MPRTO believe and pray that the international day of peace is dedicated to ending the war and suffering in northern Uganda, Iraq, Palestine, Afaghanstan, Somalia and the world in general.
Tolerating Diversity is fundamental to making peace in the world, because God created us different so that we may know each other.
We also call upon the media to play its cardinal role of informing and educating the people about the need promote peace, the need to coexistence, the need to address our commonalities and the need to promote tolerance in society.
MPRTO also believes that this day should be for reconciliation in our country and forging the way forward for development.
We also pray that acts that breach peace and cause insecurity worldwide should not be allowed to flourish in our communities.
Happy celebrations
