i wrote a rave review of this site in my online mag (200,000 readership) and quite a fe people will have joined because of it. but i've had quite a few 'complaints' which i want to pass on.
nothing big :)
it's just (and i had this problem when joining too) that when u fill in the form and get anything wrong EVERYTHING disappears and u have to start again it's enuff to put anyone off. perhaps it's a test? :D

another thing that's unclear is the list of areas or subjects. it takes quite a while to realise that u can tick several, not just ONE.

that's it!

This suggestion has to do with the capability to "add to your network". "Add to your network" is similar to "add to your watch list", they both pertain to your personal profile.

I have an organizational profile inside Wiser it wasn't clear at first that connections could only be added this way to my personal profile. We may want to have the link read "add to your personal network".

I also suggest we arrange the listed functions to reflect their differences.

The most important suggestion is a meta suggestion: start (or open to the public) a bug / ticket tracker.

On to my bug:

Edit profile description (or bio section or whatever the big text part is) is not working. Other edit buttons do bring up mini window for writing. Firefox 2 on Mac OS X.

Then I tried adding a comment with the update, but the HTML doesn't work in it, and there's no undo, edit, or delete on one's own comments.

I (ill-advisedly) tried flagging my own comment for review, but there's no further feedback possible nor an undo for this.

Please don't ban me, even at my own report. ;-)

hi. technical feedback: i went to add a resource, and I could not include an image in the description. I tried in both Safari and Firefox, was able to upload an image, but not insert it into the description.

thanks!

would it be possible to change the search function to display organizations with multiple branches the same way wiserearth checks for existing organizations when we try to add organizations? For example, compare the results for "service for peace" when searching from the toolbar to the results when I try to add an organization with a similar name. I'm not sure if that makes sense.

Re: Goofy list characters
Hi Doug - regarding the goofy list characters, with euros instead of list bullets, not sure why that happened - but my guess is the original poster just copied and pasted the text from a word doc or a website, and those characters got translated as such. We are developing a WYSIWYG editor that might alleviate some of these formatting issues, but in the meantime, we will have to address these one by one.

Re: States not showing up in search results - excellent suggestion, thanks for pointing this out, I will turn this into a tech ticket.

Re: Search algorithm (typo checking)
Improving the search engine is a long overdue enhancement, and it's good that you are finding out little ways where the search results go awry. This is an issue I'm campaigning for the tech team to make a priority, so if you continue to come across search issues, please, by all means, let us know, and I will try to consolidate all the problems into a proposal.

Re: Goofy event start dates - hmm....I'll have to look into this - I remember seeing this pop up before, possibly from one of your previous comments, but could not recreate it. Thanks for the headsup - I'll have to likely make this into a tech ticket.

Re: Search engine - clear search. Excellent idea.

Re: copying and pasting name - interesting, the source code shows an invisible div span with this text, no idea what it might be for. Same reason why the "]" shows up in some search results. Possibly some leftover remnant from the development stages that wasn't cleared out. I will have to turn this into a tech ticket, but it will likely be a low priority issue for the time being.

Hi Doug - regarding your search results and how the don't include the state, that's an excellent issue to point out. I'll turn that into a tech ticket for the team.

It would be neat to provide sample invite text (boiler plate invite with url to profile/link) to NGO's - so that it's easier for them to invite their boards, staff members, and supporters to join their network on Wiser Earth via email (or printable pdf for inclusion in their mailed newsletters). And if a link to the ready-made invite were shown on a launch/announcement email to NGO's for example - they could utilize it right away to send off/forward the announcement to their board, staff, and supporters.

If not already suggested, add a stat on profile pages that shows how many times the profile was viewed. I saw in my own website that several people connected to me via my WiserEarth profile and that number of referrals made me want to add more information and network more on Wiser Earth. So I think if people and NGO's see how many times (or even receive an alert weekly) their information is viewed, they could be excited about utilizing the site more. Also - if you send the NGO's a launch letter to let them know they are listed, this amount viewed item would be a powerful thing to include - they'd be more apt to go to the site to see what it's all about and what their page looks like...

estorriol great suggestion. the areas of focus are unwieldy based on the mere length. any organizational thoughts are appreciated. I'll send this on the developers to make a change. In the mean time, you can search for areas of focus by typing in a keyword that relates to the org you are trying to describe.

hope this is helpful

I find it a little difficult sometimes to find the appropriate Areas of Focus when I'm in the process of adding new organizations. Would it be possible to simplify the process by turning the entry box into a tree, similar to the way Windows handles folders/files in Internet Explorer?

Conflicting org. stats - homepage vs. orgs page

From homepage:

Latest WiserEarth Stats
105,358 Organizations

Orgs page <http://www.wiserearth.org/organization/>:

Results 1 to 10 of 105497 organizations

Expected: # of orgs. on homepage, orgs page, and elsewhere, if applicable, is always consistent

What should be apostrophe appears as 3 characters:

http://www.wiserearth.org/organization/view/f539e6c184f1529d82028a8b3b01bb0a/
Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust CCALT

Instead of apostrophe in "Cattlemen's", there are three characters:

- a with circumflex
- Euro symbol
- TM symbol

Perhaps this goofiness also appears in other records.

Firefox 2.0.0.3, Mac OS 10.4.9

* Seemingly unnecessary granularity for old record date info:

Updated 1yr 17d 4h 4m ago

Also observed in bogus event date context:

Posted: 37yr 4mo 24d 22h 4m ago

For more than a few days, it seems hours and minutes are increasingly less relevant.

Consider using two units, depending on age, e.g.:

mm ss
hh mm
dd hh
ww dd
mm ww
yy mm

No message when attempting to add connection when one already exists

Select a record with some existing network connection (or create one)
Add another connection to same link

No notice that it's already been added. Seems like there's no point in adding something that already exists.

Consider:

Some (obvious) way to display/highlight an existing network connection record
Disabling [Add Connections] button if connection already exists

Perhaps someone with more web UI experience might suggest some options.
