The new "Sign up!" button on the front page is a good idea. It is likely more visitors would convert and sign up if the button said...

Sign up Now!
It's free

Just a thought...

Thnx dan;el, that's good to see/know. Holy bat cave, I've made 7 of the last 20 comments across the entire site over the last two days. Somebody shoot me with a tranquilizer dart.

Jon, I agree that a temporary "filter out group" would be a nice feature to have in the visualize network tool. Would be nice if when you have a cloud that is closed on first click it simply opened up (and the next largest group closed to become a cloud), then a second click could bring the text list above.

OK, tranq dart is taking effect...getting woozy.
Sm_avatar
If would be nice when you are visualizing a network to filter out any given set of items, i.e. show me just the orgs, show me the events, areas of focus, etc.

When I search for something on the search bar, the advance search panel doesn't open up. i have to take an extra step by clicking on one of the options next to "Refine your Search". I think it might be more convenient if the search panel is set to open as a default whenever you hit the search button.

Hey Mark
In response to your first comment, this is possible but it is a little harder to find.
Click on Recent Activity in the Left Navigation.
Then in the upper right hand corner click on the link View Comments Across the Site. You will be able to see all comments on site, then you can click view context in any comment to see what page it was posted on.
Cheers!

New posts in discussion areas don’t seem to show up under either "recent site activity" or "user/active" page and seems like if they did it would be a good way to slip more people into active dialogues.

Also, while this suggestion could be turned on/off under a member profiles, seems like if a post is made under your profile, or in another thread where you have made a comment it would drive more interaction and users back if all participants in that thread got at an email notification. (for instance below, Soren would have to be tracking this page to know I responded to him)

Small thing, but having the word "people" so often in the Area of Focus (under personal profiles) makes the interface a tad kludgey (for my taste). I think if the number where there, people would still get it, and it would look much cleaner

Not this...

| Social Entrepreneurship (81 people) | Sustainable Livelihoods (41 people) | Youth Participation (16 people)

But this...

| Social Entrepreneurship (81) | Sustainable Livelihoods (41) | Youth Participation (16)

Soren, nice to see you here, please check out the WiserEarth Social Entrepreneur page, I'm trying to play around with the discussion thread feature there. BTW, that picture of you and Navarre is great, I showed Pam last night.

Cool. The Community space will be good, and I really like the "Today's List" om the front page as it gives people new info. I still think it can be good to have time-sensitive events of some kind, at least I like those, as there is a beginning and end to them.I also like the list of where to begin.

One other reflection. When I registered, there seemed to be a push to create a profile, which is on the front page and makes a lot of sense. So I did that and added "about" info today. So what then would like me to do? I know this is hard, and you could say, "anything you want," but when I look at all things I can do on the left bar, it is a little daunting to me. I wonder, Are all these equal, or should some stand out more, a different color, bigger font, something that helps to direct me as a new user? Every social network offers a lot of things, but the successful ones also seem to have a primary way to engage. For me, some direction could help . . . this could change of course based on user feedback, but it could help to have some action beyond the profile that you encourage.

Thanks, Soren. It's great to hear feedback about networking aspects of the site, what works for ppl and what doesn't. We should have a few templates up to customize personal profiles in the next few weeks (check the profile section in FAQ for updates). As for public messages, people can add comments below the 'About' section of another person's profile. I'll add your other tech comments to our tech 'wishlist' that we're continually updating(see suggestions/questions pages for the current list). As for community meeting places online, we're setting up discussion pages linked from each Area of Focus page, so people can go directly to their topic of interest to meet/debate/discuss. These should all be set up by the end of this week, let me know how useful that space is for you.

great photo, by the way!

Great site folks. I think you all have covered a great deal of what makes social networks site work. A few suggestions. (If some of these are available and missed them, my apologies)

* Allow people to create their own url as their profile page. People want a place to direct friends to see their activity, photos, etc, and if I can have mine at wiserearth.org/soren that is much easier to direct people to and gives me a sense of ownership, rather than wiserearth.org/user/687678 or the like. Likewise, any ways to customize one's profile page and the HTML is great.

* The other is a place to leave a public message, very popular on MySpace. I can jot a note to someone and they do not have to respond. Yes, I can send a message, but people like to see their words and read those of others sometimes.

* Third, allow embeddable code. (I work for a group that offers an embeddable widget, so I have a certain self-interest in this) but again Myspace has shown that benefits of this. Yet here it can be more positive widgets, updating news and information important to that person. I tried to add a flash widget and couldn't do it.

* Lastly, have some place for the community to come together -- a weekly discussion on a subject, a monthly interview with a leader in a field, an action to take. If the "session" can lead to something, all the better.

And lastly, lastly, I get the sense that you all want people to add to the Resource list -- this seems to be a goal. There must then be a way to highlight that in some way -- show the top ten recent additions on the hompeage, show the top people listing resources, rate them in some way so you can see what is important . . .

Good luck with the effort!

I am an example of what Jon Ramer just said. My username is ourfounder and not Jim Benson. Jon might know that they're synonymous, but few others would.
Sm_avatar
People are registering and using any format for their username. It is sometimes impossible to tell from the username who that person is. I suggest we tighten up the relationship between "user name" and "name". What if we showed the name as well as their username e.g. when you visualize a network their name is more meaningful than their username.

hello, kseverence. glad you could get on despite your earlier problems. your comments about the cookies and cursor will be transferred to the tech team.

as for linking other people and organizations or anything for that matter, there is no formally mutual linking system designed yet. presently there is a way to create a personal dynamic network that can be referenced through your profile. this is accomplished by adding any hyperlinks to your "About" section on your profile. whether they be people, orgs, or otherwise a map is created which you can see by pressing "Visualize Network".

Would be good to let users know they need cookies on/accept in order to log in. A visible curser in the edit windows would be great too, if possible. Not sure how to link myself to friends in the system, but will search the help to find out....
Sm_avatar
When you go to "people" you get a list titled "Browse People". You can choose to "browse by name" or by "site activity". I suggest we rename "browse by name" to "browse by username" since it sorts by username and not by name.
Sm_avatar
While the number of users is relatively small, why not suggest a convention for creating usernames?

Hi Axil,

Great to see you on the live chat the other day- welcome! One way you can see who is connected to an organization is to open the organization's profile and click 'Visualize Network' on the righthand column. This mapping tool shows all the people who have linked themselves to the org, as well as the areas of focus, events, resources and other Wiserearth pages that are related to this org. This tool is also on your personal profile.

Hey Kelly- We have no way to track that right now. Duplicates are caught when searching for orgs, but it's be nice to have a better system set up. Hmm...I'll add it to the to-do list...
Sm_avatar
I should know better(!) but I've managed to add a few items I consider "resources" that are actually in the db as "organizations", added long ago. (100-mile Diet for example). Will they remain as separate entries, or will an editor eventually consolidate them?
Sm_avatar
How can an animated gif be used as an avatar? I've tried using the suggested way and I can't seem to get it to work.

I have had a blast getting to know the site. The beta is _way_ more advanced than I ever dreamed it would be. The key next step as I see it is to ensure that 'people' can be _in_ 'organizations.' That is, when I'm on an orgs' page, I should see what WE people are in that org. NCI is an org in WE, its members are people in WE, but when you go to NCI, you don't see the people. But orgs are their people, and I think we're all seeing how key getting social networking layered in ASAP is. To that end, check out http://elgg.org/. Finally, little thing, top nav should take users to sections as does side nav. Thx.
