Thanks Angus, yes, it would be really useful to see how WiserEarth Groups compare against other groupware that is currently available.
In addition, I imagine there are many nonprofits groups using sites like Yahoo! and Facebook who would benefit from being part of the WiserEarth community, but are reluctant to move their groups to WiserEarth as they've been using these platforms for so long - so making it easy to move a group to a different platform should also be part of some future research. |

Good idea Angus. Will feed in nicely to a WiserEarth introduction page/tour linked from the homepage or to the About Us page. Will check back here later to give more reading and thoughts.

I think it would be great as a marketing document to show the functionality, cost, easy of use against other competitive platforms. I would help prospective group creators decide which platform to use. I am imagining something that talks about the following categories and comapres them to common free and paid groupware products such as Ning, Facebook, BaseCamp, GoogleGroups, YahooGroups, and then against using MS Suite and PopMail:
Cost / Group
Cost / User
Some WE specific features like
repurposing content into other groups
Multigroup editing of the same content
Then runs through actual functionality using some of the sub headings under this Wikipedia post:
- 2.1 Electronic communication tools
- 2.2 Electronic conferencing tools
- 2.3 Collaborative management tools
Anyone want to join me in this effort?
