Hi Lance, I'm not sure what's the right design solution here... but I'm pretty sure that in the future it'll be easier for users to find and post jobs on WiserEarth. Thanks for the suggestion!

Is this a suggestion that might turn upside down, the way jobs are fond?
Is what is be asked - is there away for people who know people, to connect their knowledge about what is going on and what is needed, to people that have that knowledge to offer suggestions or help to the person in need of a job? If so, that’s an entirely different way of understanding how jobs are connected with people, not people connected with jobs. It’s about who could fulfill or grow into work what was needed, but the need needs to be known – needs connected to people. Is it a question of exploring a wider circle of awareness for people who are looking and developing that circle? If so how would that circle be developed and expanded? What would the ‘area of focus’ be? For example how could people who have contributed to WE become a knowledge base of such collaboration? Could it be “framed” as help, a place where people could share their job experience with people who have a lesser or are new to the world of work? Instead of asking for a job, it would be a place were people who have jobs, careers and knowledge about how it all works and could share experiences with people who are looking to attain that “bliss?” So could the area of focus be not jobs, but “work knowledge” that would be beneficial to job seekers? ... your thoughts? |

I think this suggestion is calling out for a Needs/Wants section on WiserEarth in similar vein to Craig's List. While this may take some time to develop from an IT perspective, maybe this is something that could initially be created in a WiserEarth Group - perhaps a group for job seekers, a group for 2nd hand items that could be re-used etc.

Not sure we want to duplicate / compete with a whole host of job posting / listing services. What does interest me is rethinking jobs. I've been advocating a bit for some for of structure for consultants/experts who want to sell or volunteer their experience to the WE community. This would require chunking of a person's experience in their profile and the ability for a user to ask for recommendations from his/her clients. We want reputation to come through. It would be great if people could signal their willingness to help out and how much they would be willing to do - paid or unpaid. This sort of mixes some of the freelancer sites out there with Linked-in. Again, whatever was done on WE would need to meet a distinctive need core to the community - there is no sense in duplicating a commercial site that would simply do it better! Perhaps this is part of the connecting.

One thing that LinkedIn does which I quite like is that it asks "want you are looking to be contacted for" when you first register. I like this approach as it speaks to the reason why people are joining the site in the first place. This type of functionality could be a great addition to the profile registration part on WiserEarth i.e. if people looking for a job could post themselves as such (and recruiters could find those looking for work on WE.). I agree, we definitely don't want to duplicate the host of excellent job services already on offer, but to provide ways to create connections between the people on WiserEarth on a number of different levels. |

Look, it's really quite simple. I'm a whole systems designer and I need a project or job to pay my bills, to eat, to live. I design homes and communities based on the concepts of Natural Capitalism and Buckminster Fuller etc.ie whole systems design.
It seems that a person with my particular skills set should be in high demand right now. But I'm finding it difficult to find paying clients.
Perhaps your next home should be super energy efficient and totally off the grid? You should hire me to design and build such a home.
Perhaps you are a land owner and you want your land to be gently developed so that people and nature can co exist for many future generations? You should hire me to develop such a project.
This is a special place. It is a type of universe where I should able to ask for exactly what I need. As long as it falls within the basic scope of sustainability and the principles of Nat Cap and Leads us to a WiserEarth.
WholEarth, WiserEarth, Whole Earth... This place is my home. And you are my family. I have special needs.
I know, perhaps we could just have a link to "Post a Skill"?
Or a page called "Jobs Wanted"?
Thank you all for your thoughts.

We do all tend to think in similar ways about larger issues.
I hate to admit it but I really need a job. I am an environmental designer that works in entertainment and in the housing design and construction industry.
I'm available to travel and looking forward to working with progressive governments outside the U.S.
