draft of "Country/Regional Group Administrator"
http://wiserearth.org/article/a24f2935e9aaa39db2b3629f4082d6bf/new/1 WiserEarth is an online community consisting of visitors and users around the world. In order to further diversify our site activity and data, there is a need to attract users from under-represented regions and countries. By building a WiserEarth Group based within a specific region or country a WiserEarth volunteer or intern will help attract new users, discussion, activity and content (organizations, events, jobs, etc.) from the selected location. This will greatly extend the WiserEarth community beyond the United States and predominantly English-speaking nations. A WiserEarth Country/Regional Group Administrator will be responsible for: * increasing the number of users from the selected location to join the country/regional group (example: China, India, Free Burma, Cascadia Portal) note: groups do not have to be politically neutral * inciting users from the selected location to participate CONTENT MANAGEMENT -adding additional orgs, resources, events, jobs, etc. -removing irrelevant orgs, data etc. -editing and updating the group to raise awareness of the area and showcase/highlight organizations, resources, etc. PUBLICITY -sharing the group to relevant orgs -sharing the group to relevant/related websites, online communities, blogs or listserves FEEDBACK -1-2 page monthly group needs assessment While on this project, the aof developer may draw conclusions about: -the necessity of certain resources, additional volunteers -the necessity of certain features to support the group |

This would be wonderful - will this be posted on the jobs section?

Again, excellent idea Mike!
And the same question... since you used the word "Volunteer and Intership Projects", will this be a policy/job from NCI (internship), or an initiative of the community (volunteer)? |
|
Oh yeah, will this also be connected in any way with the WiserEarth Editors group we have @ http://www.wiserearth.org/group/WiserEarthEditors ?
Or more precisely, may/should we take the project under the wings or the Editors group? or will it be under the direct guidance of NCI? |
|
Let's take this project under the wings of the Editor's group for the time being...it can help us develop the specifics. I definitely think that NCI should find volunteers and interns to work on these two projects (country group admin & aof admin/editor) too, and so far there is an interest in the country group admin. role, we haven't really discussed the aof manager role.
First step, a name. I think a group should be created asap. After realizing that we need groups for regions and "unofficial" countries as well, my preference in naming this group is "Regional Group Editors". |
|
Got that. Let's do this too and see what comes out.
As for the name, I'm not sure I get your point when you said "we need groups for regions and 'unofficial' countries as well". Can you elaborate on this a bit more? And the name "Regional Group Editors" does not sound intuitive to me. For example: what region? Regional groups? On the other hand, if we lose the "Group", it sounds better: "Country Administrator" or "Country Representative", or "Continental Administrator/Representative". This would sound a bit formal and hierarchical though, and may imply unnecessary impression that there are other "administrator" role beside WE's official "administrator" role and group's "administrator"... So, I guess we need to work on the name a bit more. Country Editors? National Editors? hmm... what do others think? |
|
I used some awkward wording, let me try again. Basically I'm saying users should be able to create a group that does not reflect the UN's opinion (or any other authority) of what a "country" or "region" is. And even to refer to a place that structurally does not currently exist, but could exist, or used to exist. Im saying that groups on WiserEarth should be open to groups that seek independence from a country. The world's borders change, so we should expect that, and to also expect resistance from such change. I also think there are regions such as "Cascadia", that are welcome to form groups such as WE.
I have to agree with you, losing "Group" sounds better. I'm not sure if there is one encompassing word or phrase to tie it all together. It can't be Country, because not every location is one.. Synonyms of region/country: area, belt, district, locality, neighborhood, quarter, tract, zone, territory, reservation, state, body politic, land, nation, polity This could take a while... |

I am leaning towards "Regional Editors"
The original intention of creating the "country group admin" project was to build a more international base of users. However, the usefulness of groups for entire countries is questionable. In time, I expect these groups to consist of their own sub-groups where more effective collaboration can occur. For ex., though this site consists of many Americans, I don't imagine someone will think a "United States" group will be particularly effective...but I think it could be an effective segway to subgroups for regions within the US...(states, bioregions, parts of states, neighborhoods). When we get down to these regional levels, we will see a more enthusiastic and focused effort to build the group on WiserEarth, and activity from "Editors" or "Administrators" (for example: Permaculture Alliance of California, Cascadia) Having a group for a continent like "Asia" (which I created) is probably a bit ridiculous for some people too, but it serves a purpose when its a step for users to find other groups and people which they could work with. The first step is to develop the number of users from a particular region. So, a Regional Editor title would be appropriate, if we can agree that their goal can be to develop the number of users from a region who sign-up on WE and to be represented on a group. Does this make sense? So far I'm seeing at least two distinct goals for regional editors. Some or all of their time can be focused on outreach and a more general area or set of regions/countries (for ex: Asia, India). Or, some or all of their time can be focused on one or two specific regions that have a more clear incentive, motivation, or agenda for having a WiserEarth group (for ex: Cascadia, Free Burma) |

How bout Regional Development Editors
|
|
What if we don't give people a title and get the programmers to make group admins the person(s) in the group connected to the greatest number of other users within the group? This person can call him/herself whatever he/she likes and would have no responsibility per se but would naturally tend to invite more people and make the greatest use of the group.
Thoughts? |
|
Yea maybe its best not to give a title. I like it. We still need a name for the group though....WiserEarth International Development? Global?
|
|
How about "Geographical Organizers"?
We could use the same naming convention for similarly selected leaders in other spheres: "Resource Organizers" - most connections within category of resources "Linguistic Organizers" - most connections in language "Professional Organizers" - most connections to particular job function "Content Organizers" - most connections within a Wiki's network You could extend this to all the entities on WE really... just might not make sense. |

Hey all. Just to keep things up to date, Michael has created a group on this as a result of our discussion.
It's called "WiserEarth Global Communities" @ http://www.wiserearth.org/group/gcs |

By building a WiserEarth Group based within a country (France, India, Burma/Myanmar, etc.) a WiserEarth volunteer or intern will help attract new users, discussion, activity and content (organizations, events, jobs, etc.) from the respective country. This will greatly extend the WiserEarth community beyond the United States and predominantly English-speaking nations.
This project will also serve our principle of visibility, by enabling organizations from our Earth's network to be visible to each other and correct the inequalities in our world.
