About Sustainable North Carolina

Sustainable North Carolina (SNC) is accelerating the adoption of principles and practices that optimize economic prosperity, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship throughout our state. Our network of professionals from business, nonprofit and government is generating innovative strategies and tools to help North Carolina prosper indefinitely.

Founded in 1998 as a 501c3 (then known as Save Our State), we started as a moderate voice working with the business community, policymakers, farmers, environmental groups and concerned citizens to develop practical solutions to environmental issues.

Our Goals:

  • Increase understanding and adoption of sustainability as a strategic framework for organizations, with a focus on the opportunities presented by innovative products, services and business models
  • Establish the "triple bottom line" as a widely accepted guiding principle for North Carolina’s future by business and civic leaders
  • Enable the implementation of sustainable principles and practices by North Carolina organizations with practical tools and resources
PROGRAMS

NC Sustainable Business Council (NCSBC)
This member-led organization works as a catalyst for change for an environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable future for our state.

NC Sustainability Awards & Conference
Each year, Sustainable North Carolina brings together decision makers to explore strategies for an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable future for our state, and honors organizations that are leading the way with innovative practices.

This high-profile event attracts business, government, nonprofit and academic leaders from across the southeast region. The program includes interactive discussions with business leaders and experts on taking sustainability from theory to real world practice. Past speakers have included internationally-recognized authors and experts including: Amory Lovins, Paul Hawken, Bill McDonough and Brian and Mary Nattrass, as well as corporate CEOs such as Sally Jewell of REI and John Replogle of Burt’s Bees.
