About [Edit]
Since 1957, the San Jose Peace Center has educated thousands of local people to critical issues of peace and justice. Throughout its history, the Peace Center has been a consistent voice for alternatives to the ever increasing violence and militarism taking place through out the world.
The Peace Center was founded in 1957 by individuals profoundly concerned about the growth of nuclear arsenals and about atmospheric testing. With the signing of the Limited Test Ban Treaty in 1963, the Peace Center then spearheaded local efforts to end the war in Vietnam. When the Vietnam war ended, the Peace Center then made nuclear disarmament and the development of nonviolence its primary concerns.
In 1983, the San Jose Peace Center formalized its long-term relationship with the Fellowship of Reconciliation by becoming an affiliate of FOR. The FOR is an interfaith, international pacifist organization. Through this affiliation, the Peace Center receives its 501[c][3] nonprofit status.
Our dynamic programs have been growing for over 40 years. We are committed to promoting peace, equality, nonviolence and tolerance through education, resources, activities, meetings and direct action. We are a clearing-house and resource center for literature, ideas, meetings, and activities.
