International Day of Peace 2007
Mr. Bryan D. Hunt Principal Officer, US Consulate Lahore said in his views on the occasion of International Day of Peace that I am thankful to Organizers of the
International Day of Peace to share my view about international day of peace and the importance of peace in this era. He said that since the inception of 21st Century international community is passing through a terrible time of the history. He said that we (international community) are being threatened by terrorists and fundamentalist and such organizations which are the promoters of terrorism and anti peace.

Soon after the incident of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, UNO came into existence to solve the problems of the world through dialogue and negotiations. He also elaborated in details the role of United Nations to build peace around the world. But sometimes countries of the world have some misunderstandings, reservations and confusions to solve the problems peacefully.
A war is not the solution or settles down the problem or the end of the dialogue. No one in the world is happy to solve the certain problems through war.
He also said that if we look at the name of the Organization for Peace and Development. We see that the first part of the organization is “PEACE”; and in peace we grow and enjoy the life. There is no development without peace. To develop and build the international relations we need a peaceful atmosphere. And when there will be peace then we can focus on Development the 2nd part of the organization “DEVELOPMENT.” Hence, no body can think about development without peace.
He further said that there are diplomats, politicians, bureaucrats, religious leaders and media to deal with the matters of the countries with each other. There are negotiations/discussions, talks, and dialogue are held time to time to save the international community from anti peace activists. He also added that promotion of peace through education system is a good idea. The role of teachers in this regard is very important. They are building the capacity of individuals even in a group. Furthermore, the United Nations are there to support such initiatives like today to promote peace and harmony among the nations of the world and religions. He also elaborated in details the role of United Nations to build peace around the world.
Mr. Jahangir Piara Executive Director, Organization for Peace and Development said; in order to achieve a sustainable world peace and a global culture whose values reflect a genuine desire for peace and a rejection of violence? OPD believes that it is of paramount importance to make what we call education for peace and sustainability an integral part of our collective learning. In practice, this means making peace education for a sustainable world more accessible to a wider audience, and acknowledging its teaching as a legitimate discipline in the formal educational system for growing recognition of the human values.

The United Nations declared the Year 2000 as "the International Year for a Culture of Peace" and 2001-2010 is being designated as "the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World".
Hence, the Organization for Peace and Development is supporting the UN Agenda for the ongoing decade of peace through its peace education activities with the students of targeted schools.
We wish that our present and next generation should enjoy the life without war and violent conflict. We therefore, organize such activities time to time like today to encourage and aware the young generation that a peaceful future of the world is in their hands and they must make it more and safer for the international community and mankind in the universe.
Remember that the actions and reaction done by the individual in any part of the world affect the whole universe. Therefore, we have to be very careful about all of our actions and deeds we do in our daily life. We also need to focus on our attitude because, I think that it is our attitude which impact and influence the human nature. I also would like to add that all religions of the world teach us to respect man, regardless of color, race, gender and faith.
Our approach for doing anything should be positive because with the positive thinking and approach we will win and achieve the peace and human dignity. Nevertheless, you are the future decision makers and you are to choose the right direction and it is the duty of parents, educationists, teachers, civil societies, human rights activists/peace activists and politicians to help and guide the young people to make our living planet in reality a living planet, where, all the living beings may lead their lives in a prosperous and peaceful manner.
