Here are some guidelines on how to fill out the General Info section for the organization entries. Please fill out as much information as possible.

Name: Name of the organization (this is a required field). Please include the organization acronym here if there is one, (e.g. Natural Capital Institute NCI).

Alternate Name: Sometimes organizations are known by a different name, a shorter version, or an alternative name in a different language – please enter it in this field.

Website: Please enter the website address here (url), (e.g. www.naturalcapital.org).

Main email: This is the general contact email address for the organization, (e.g. info@naturalcapital.org).

Contact name: This is the name of a key contact person. Please included their job title if it is known, (e.g. John Smith, President).

Contact email: This is the email address of the key contact person named as the Contact, (e.g. jsmith@naturalcapital.org).

Phone: Please enter the telephone number including all country and area codes.

Extension: Enter the telephone extension, if available.

Tollfree: Enter the tollfree telephone number if there is one, (e.g. 1 800 777 7777).

Fax: Please enter the facsimile telephone number including all country and area codes.

Address: Please enter the first line of the street address of the organization. The street address is preferable to the postal or PO box address.

Address2: Please enter the second line of the street address of the organization.

City: Please enter the city name.

Province: Please enter the Province, County or Region where it is applicable.

Postal code: Please enter the Zip code or Postal code.

State: Please enter the state for US based organizations or leave blank for non-US organizations.

Country: Select the country from the drop down menu (this is a required field).

Scope: This describes the scope of work of the organization. For example an NGO may be located in San Francisco but its work is focused on children’s health in Africa. In that scenario, the scope would be ‘international’.

Type: Select the type which best describes the organization, such as a Foundation, Research Institute, or Community Based Organization etc. If you do not know the organization type, leave the Type as the default Non-Governmental organization.

Organization Type Description

Non-governmental Organization (NGO) A non-profit group that is independent of the government.
Village-based Organization (VBO) A VBO is a grassroots group of individuals organized by and for members of a village/small community to address specific issues, (e.g. village recycling).
Community-based Organization (CBO) A CBO is a group of individuals organized by and for a community for a specific purpose. The community can be geographical, (e.g. a town) or have a common interest, (e.g. organic food systems) and is grassroots in nature. Similar to a VBO but generally a larger community.
Network / Coalition/ Collective A group of people/organizations that are connected and are collaborating on a particular issue.
Foundation A philanthropic organization that gives funds, support services, or other ‘in-kind’ support to other non-profit organizations.
Educational Organization A school, university, college or learning center.
Research Institute An organization or think-tank with a central mission of carrying out research.
Media Organization An organization that works predominantly in media, including publishing, journalism, television, film and radio.
Faith-based Organization (FBO) An organization that was established by a particular church or in the name of a specific faith with faith-based organizational values.
UN Organization Any organization that is part of the United Nations or is associated with the United Nations.

Location type: This identifies whether the contact details for this entry are for the headquarters, local, regional or other office.

Staff: Number of staff members of the organization, if available.

Members: Number of members of the organization, if available.

Volunteers: Number of volunteers of the organization, if available .

Time Zone: Please select a time zone from the drop down menu. The time zone used is the number of hours difference between Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and the time of the country, (e.g. an organization located in New Delhi, India is 5.5 hours ahead of GMT or 5.5 hrs, and an organizatin in California, USA is 8 hours behind GMT or –8 hrs). If you are unsure of the time zone you refer to www.timeanddate.com.

Activities: The activities describe the type of work that the organization undertakes, (e.g. activism, research, networking, educational work and philanthropy). You can choose as many activities as you want to describe the ways in which the organization fulfils its mission.

Organization Activity Description

Activist Creating social change by taking grassroots action such as advocacy, direct action, lobbying and campaigning.
Educational Increasing public information and raising awareness about a particular topic to draw attention to that issue.
Networking Connecting with and exchanging information between individuals, institutions and other groups.
Philanthropy Donating or granting money or other gifts to charitable causes to promote sustainable human welfare.
Research Studying an issue to provide more information and scientific knowledge about that issue.
